How Does a Boiler Work?

A boiler warms your home by heating water in a large tank using oil, gas, or electricity. Unlike its name may imply, the water doesn’t actually boil. Rather, the steam or hot water created is dispersed throughout your rooms using pumps, gravity, and/or pressure to warm your home to your desired temperature through your radiators, thermostats, baseboards, or other heat system.

Hot water systems are much more common due to their efficiency. Newer boilers can also regulate how hot the water gets based on outdoor temperatures, providing smarter, more efficient heat. This means that replacing your older boiler can not only keep your family warm, but it can also save you money on your monthly utility bills.

Boiler Repairs & Maintenance

Without proper maintenance, the need for repairs can be unfortunately common. Older units also tend to need servicing more often then newer and more efficient boilers. Thankfully, there are some signs to keep an eye out for that may indicate your boiler needs to be repaired.

Call us if you notice any of the following issues:

  • Cold air blowing through your vents when the heat is switched on or a lack of hot water when you turn on the tap.
  • Unusual noises, such as whirring, clanging, whistling, gurgling, or banging sounds, which can indicate worn components, low water pressure, or trapped debris.
  • Odd smells, which can indicate a gas or carbon monoxide leak. Call our team immediately if your boiler is emitting a foul odor or if you notice the flame has turned yellow.
  • Higher heating bills that can indicate an old, inefficient boiler in need of repairs or a replacement.
  • Puddles around your boiler, indicating a leak. Never let this go unchecked, as the water can seep into your walls or flooring, leading to expensive repairs.

Has your heat gone out on the coldest night of the year? We understand that emergencies rarely happen during working hours, which is why our team offer emergency services to efficiently get your boiler back in working order. In addition, our expert maintenance services can find and fix problems before they even occur, helping ensure you and your family are never left out in the cold. With regular maintenance, you can not only prevent issues from happening, but annual tune-ups can help extend the lifespan and efficiency of your boiler so you get the most out of your HVAC investment and don’t end up overpaying on your monthly utility bills.
